Fable Showcases Combat With Melee Weapons, Magic, Bows, and Dismemberment

Playground Games has provided a detailed look at combat in its upcoming action RPG Fable via a post from Xbox Wire.

The new details come from a playable Gamescom 2026 demo titled Mud and Death. The quest follows the Hero and Heroes’ Guild leader Humphry into a formerly flooded mine populated by Hollow Folk, Wraiths, and other enemies. The demo was set deep into the game and had multiple loadouts.

Players can move between melee, ranged, and magical attacks during combat without opening menus. Equipment and selected spells can change how encounters play out, while dodging and parrying provide defensive options.

The two-handed Bower Hammer has slower attacks that deal heavier damage and can hit multiple nearby enemies with a single swing. A charged attack sends the Hero spinning through enemies with several strikes. Successful parries can also dismember Hollow Folk. Weapons have their own finishing moves as well.

Magic is assigned to four slots accessed by holding the right trigger and pressing one of the face buttons. Each spell operates on a cooldown, and seven spells were detailed during the demo.

Fireball can be fired quickly to interrupt an enemy or charged for a larger explosion. Lightning chains between nearby targets, while Blades creates phantom daggers for attacking enemies at range. Lift suspends multiple enemies in the air and can be cast again to slam them into the ground.

Rush teleports the character behind a target and can also move vertically, providing a way to reach enemies positioned above the player. Push knocks enemies backward and can be combined with Rush to send targets from ledges. Befowl transforms enemies into chickens. Using the spell against undead enemies creates undead chickens.

Two ranged weapons were available. The Deepwood Bow has a slower draw but higher accuracy, making it useful for targeting specific body parts. The Repeater Crossbow instead fires weaker bolts rapidly and proved effective against Wraiths.

Targeting body parts can have additional effects. Shooting an unarmored enemy in the leg can cause it to stumble, while certain enemies have specific weak points that favor ranged attacks.

Enemy types also encourage players to change tactics during larger encounters. Hollow Folk include melee, ranged, and armored variants, with armored versions resistant to ranged attacks. Their unprotected body parts can be dismembered without necessarily killing them.

Fable will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store on February 23, 2027.
