The official Pokémon Youtube channel has shared a brand new trailer for the upcoming and highly anticipated Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Now, this trailer is highly unconventional and just generally unusual as a trailer, let alone for a Pokémon game. It showcases an explorer out in the mountains and concludes with him seemingly getting killed by a mysterious Pokémon that he confuses with Growlithe and Vulpix. Perhaps a Hisuian form of Arcanine? That’d be interesting.
Additionally, the video itself is somewhat unnerving with its horror-esque, found footage quality. However, it’s certainly appealing and is giving me hope for this release.

Between these reveals and the fresh new components of the battle system, some bold steps are being transparently taken here. While I wasn’t sold on this title during its initial reveal, this newly revealed footage is undoubtedly amping up the hype. The sheer premise of a Pokémon title being set this far in the past is enticing enough, and I hope that the game’s execution embraces its contextual strengths well. Based on the trailer, that certainly seems to be the case, but we will merely have to wait and see how every game design aspect coalesces early next year.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is releasing for Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2022.
