Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Reveals Menu Screen; Director Discusses UI Importance

In the latest Kickstarter backer update for the highly anticipated turn-based JRPG, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the team shared more information and developmental insight.

Firstly, a sneak peek of the game’s UI was revealed, where characters’ basic stats are presented. Additionally, equipped items, their effects, and available skills will be shown. Unfortunately, only a Japanese version of the screenshot was shared, as the UI and such are still under development and subject to change.

The project’s director and one of its lead producers, Yoshitaka Murayama, then goes on to say that regarding UI, a balance must be struck between high functionality and ease of understanding for player convenience. Features like item sorting through various criteria are all well and good, but needlessly implementing a system like that may be unnecessary and redundant.

Murayama explicitly stated the following:

“It’s unnecessary for a screen like that to appear all the time when you can switch between conditions at the tap of a button…I don’t think having a status screen that displays all the data in the game is a good idea. Having a screen filled with rows of numbers leans towards incomprehensibility. We want to present detailed information the players are looking for in a way that’s easy to understand. The status screen is structured according to those considerations.”

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is meant to be a love letter to the classic Japanese RPG genre featuring exploration and battles in high-resolution 2.5D graphics using pixel-based characters, similar to what we saw in Octopath Traveler. The story will revolve around war and friendship and introduce a diverse cast of 100 unique heroes to join the quest, which is very Suikoden.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is releasing for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2023.
