Dragon-Filled JRPG ‘Dragon Star Varnir’ Comes West With First Trailer and Screenshots
Compile Heart’s dragon-filled JRPG, Dragon Star Varnir, is flying over to North America in spring 2019 for PlayStation 4. The title will launch on PlayStation 4 (both digitally and physically), and it’s being published by Idea Factory International.
Dragon Star Varnir is set In a world where the bones of an ancient beast tower over the land.A knight named, Zephy, is part of an order whose role is to hunt down witches – people who are seen as cursed beings for giving birth to dragons.
After almost getting killed in one of his missions, two mysterious witches save him from the brink of death by feeding him dragon blood. Granted new magic abilities by their efforts, he soon finds his fate intertwined with the witches and decides to join them. With an empire out to destroy Zephy’s kind, ruthless dragon hunters around, and a powerful witch on the loose, players will have to help Zephy and his new witch allies in their quest to survive.
Given that Dragon Star Varnir is all about dragons and since dragons fly, players will fight enemies midair in a unique, vertically-oriented battle system. The system will let players strategically position their party members in different vertical tiers or levels to successfully attack and disable an enemy’s skills. For example, if an enemy has a close-range physical attack, the player can position party members above the enemy in order to avoid getting hit by the enemy’s attack.
Being on the offensive will prove to be useful, though. By continuously attacking enemies enough, players can unleash a party member’s inner dragon powers and transform their character to unlock powerful skills and newfound strength during battle. Also, by weakening an enemy dragon, players can devour the dragon, and by doing so, the player can absorb the dragon’s skill tree.
Slaying dragons aren’t only necessary to win battles, but it’s also needed to make party members happy. Three witches rely on the player to bring them dragon’s blood as food. Failure to feed the witches will cause them to go crazy while overfeeding them will turn them into a dragon. It’s up to the player to decide to keep them alive or sacrifice them to obtain ultra rare items and skills. The choices the player makes will affect the game’s ending.
