Dragon Quest Composer Koichi Sugiyama Has Passed Away

The official Dragon Quest Japan website has shared the news that Dragon Quest composer Koichi Sugiyama has passed away at age 90 on September 30, 2021. The cause of his death was septic shock.

Sugiyama composed over 500 songs for the Dragon Quest series, and his final assigned job was to compose tracks for the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. His funeral was only held with members of his family, with no members of the general public allowed. A farewell commemorative event inviting all parties is planned, but there is currently no expected time frame for when this would occur.

Koichi Sugiyama was born on April 11, 1931, in Tokyo, and he began composing songs after he completed High School. However, his aptitude was noticeable even at that age, and he composed several notable songs throughout his career. Since its inception, he was with the Dragon Quest series, creating the series’ iconic, uplifting tunes.

Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama have shared their own personal comments regarding Koichi Sugiyama’s passing on the official Dragon Quest Japan website page discussing Sugiyama’s life. Both are saddened by these events and state that the core of Dragon Quest’s music will continue to live on with Sugiyama’s long-delivered talent.
