Dragon Quest Characters and Banjo-Kazooie Are Joining the Battle in ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’
During Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct, the company revealed that Dragon Quest XI’s hero, other Dragon Quest heroes, and Banjo-Kazooie from Banjo-Kazooie will be joining the battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC.
For the Dragon Quest DLC, it’ll be releasing sometime this Summer. It seems that Dragon Quest XI‘s hero will be considered as the main playable character. However, the following Dragon Quest game heroes were shown to be playable in battle:
- Dragon Quest IV‘s hero (Dai)
- Dragon Quest VIII‘s hero
The other heroes may be something like an alternate costume or an echo. From the trailer, we got a good look at what the Dragon Quest characters’ moves will be, such as the signature “Sizzle” spell that casts a fireball at foes, and my personal favorite “Psyche Up” which basically is the equivalent of going into a Kaioken or Super Saiyan state (which is fitting given that the character designer of Dragon Quest is Akira Toriyama, the man behind the Dragon Ball series.) Furthermore, it seems that the ultimate attack for the Dragon Quest hero in Smash Ultimate will gather up all the previous Dragon Quest heroes for one mighty blow.
Similar to Dragon Ball, though, Dragon Quest is insanely popular in Japan. It’s not quite as big over here in the west, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a lot of passionate fans (like myself) that love the series.
Right at about the last minute of the Nintendo Direct, Banjo-Kazooie was revealed for Smash Ultimate. The DLC for the dynamic duo will be available Fall 2019.
For those that don’t know, Banjo-Kazooie is a lovable duo from the Banjo-Kazooie series that had old-school 3D platforming gameplay. The last Banjo-Kazooie game was Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, which was released for the Xbox 360 in 2008, but Yooka-Laylee from Playtonic Games (a team that consists of the creators of the Banjo-Kazooie series) can be considered as a spiritual successor of sorts.
We’ll be sure to share more details regarding both the Dragon Quest and Banjo-Kazooie DLCs soon, so stay tuned. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now on Nintendo Switch.
