During The Game Awards 2023, Bandai Namco officially announced the next Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi game, Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC via Steam.
Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero marks the long-awaited return of the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series, announced at The Game Awards after many years. This new entry, showcased through an in-game footage trailer, presents a visually captivating and authentic extension of the Budokai Tenkaichi series. It features meticulously recreated legendary characters and their iconic powers, engaging in monumental battles within vast, destructible arenas. The game is set to release exclusively on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. More details can be found on its official website.
Developed by Spike Chunsoft, the team behind the original Budokai Tenkaichi series, Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero is a significant step forward for the franchise. Utilizing the advanced capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, it elevates the gameplay and features of arena brawlers to new heights. Additionally, the game represents a return to the franchise’s original Japanese naming convention, aligning with how the original Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi was known as DRAGON BALL Z: Sparking! in Japan.
Mike Chang, VP, Marketing and Digital Business, Bandai Namco Entertainment America, stated the following:
“This is the Dragon Ball Sparking! Zerofighting game players have been waiting for, bringing a new sequel for one of the most beloved game series based on the franchise to a new generation of players. It has been more than 15 years since Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi pioneered arena brawlers, and Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero continues the legacy while adding new genre-defining features made possible only with the latest game platforms to deliver one of the most immersive anime game experiences of all time.”
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi is quite the beloved sub-series for the IP, spanning four titles, including three mainline titles and the Tag Team PSP entry. This particular subseries of games has been dormant for well over a decade, with the last new title released in 2010.
Unfortunately, there is little to no information on this now elusive title. However, Bandai Namco previously stated during their Games Battle Hour broadcast that it is in the early stages of development. There is no estimated release window or planned platforms, either.
