Developer Flight School Studio and MWM Interactive announced their newest project, Stonefly, in development for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC-via Steam for a summer 2021 release.
We had the opportunity to see gameplay from Stonefly and learn about its tranquil action systems. Players assume the role of Annika Stoneflow, an adventurer who works as a mechanic. The game will follow her as she goes on an adventure of self-discovery and uses the environment as her inspiration. The entire quest begins after she loses a family heirloom. To repair that trust with her father, she sets out to get it back.
Stonefly is less of a fast-paced action game and more of an exploration platformer. Players will have goals that will lead them to collect bugs and items. We learned that you’d spend 95% of the game in the air controlling a rideable mech that bounces off the ground to keep the momentum during gameplay.
As players explore, they will collect mineral shards to fix mechs and use them as currency for new items. If you get lost, players can utilize a special feature known as tracking flies that can point you in the direction you need to go. This creates a rather relaxing experience for the player, but there are still enemies to worry about.
Bugs will roam the environment looking to eat minerals. Players will need to push them away, but some bugs will need to be stunned before they can be pushed. The gameplay isn’t meant to be violent and is more focused on the speed of getting rid of bugs and exploration. To help deal with bugs, players will have access to abilities that can control the height of their jump and strength. Further, players can customize the look of their mech.
After watching the game in action, it seems Stonefly is a very low-impact adventure that focuses on the narrative of this adventurer. The story is linear, but her story is one that the developers feel players will become attached to. We’re definitely excited to learn more about Annika’s quest.
