Concrete Genie Studio Announces June 2023 Shutdown

Studio PixelOpus, the developer of Concrete Genie, has announced that Sony will shut them down on June 2, 2023. This studio is also known for having developed the rhythm title, Entwined.

The tweet from PixelOpus formally announcing their closure is quoted below:

Dear friends, our PixelOpus adventure has come to an end. As we look to new futures, we wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to the millions of passionate players who have supported us, and our mission to make beautiful, imaginative games with heart.  We are so grateful!

Interestingly, the studio did announce that they were working on a PlayStation 5 title alongside Sony back on June 2, 2021, but details on this project have been scarce ever since. In fact, it’s currently unknown whether that project’s development is still ongoing or if it’s been canceled entirely.

This news is honestly pretty saddening. While I wasn’t necessarily a massive fan of Concrete Genie, finding the experience a little too lenient, it was still a charming adventure with a heartwarming message.

In recent years, I’ve grown increasingly concerned over Sony primarily pursuing blockbuster releases and little to no experimentation with smaller-scale games. PixelOpus is, sadly, the latest affected team by this trend. Hopefully, the team can find work in other avenues as soon as possible.
