Futuristic Global Collapse Visual Novel ‘Chronicles of Refugia’ Coming to Steam Later This Month

Developer Medium and publisher YOX-Project have announced the release date for Chronicles of Refugia. The visual novel focused on a futuristic story about humanity’s struggle to survive will be available on PC via Steam on August 26, 2022. The title will be sold in an episodic format with each episode being self-contained and offering a proper ending to the story so far.

Chronicles of Refugia takes place in the Asian setting of Hourei Island after global warming aftereffects led to a catastrophic scenario of near-extinction. To make matters worse, violent conflicts using android soldiers and drones caused even more destruction. Now, in the year 23XX, what remains of humanity lives in designated shelters and life has become a constant struggle to survive.

The story of the game is focused on three Alices, each of which has their own agenda. Their stories will be developed through those individual episodes, further exploring their perspectives. The first Alice the game will delve into is the Alice who comes from the Werewolf clan. As she looks for a new base for her clan, she will travel to the deserted Hourei Island along with her servant Cain.

Initially filled with remains of human civilization, the place will flourish thanks to her efforts over the years. However, while Hourei Island’s development happens thanks to her, the local population that comes to live there considers her to be a tyrant and doesn’t seem to see her in the best light. She’s also the proprietess of the local Casino Club, a night spot for wealthy patrons.

Besides her, the story also includes a “Human Alice” called Arisu who works as a doctor and tends to be pessimistic and the mysterious Airei who goes there as part of her summer break and is rumored to have been a pop star. While they will show up in the first episode, their stories and perspectives will be further developed in the next episodes.

The first episode includes three stories, with “Alice the Red” focused on Alice the Werewolf and two side stories to further flesh out the world and characters. “Another Story: Noah -A Bird Stretches its Wings-” focuses on the enigmatic owner of the Mad Hat Teahouse. As he finds himself before a mysterious man in black under a torii gate, it seems like destiny itself directs him to Hourei Island.

Finally, there’s also “Hourei Island Excursion!”, which shows Arisu enjoying a rare day off before Christmas. However, instead of being able to just relax, he’ll encounter with Airei and Luci and end up doing some sightseeing in the island.

Chronicles of Refugia‘s story was created and planned by Kanou Takaco (Ken ga Kimi, Galtia) and co-written by Ninomae Nikai (Norn9 Last Era, Galtia, Les Grandes Odalisques). The character designs are by Kazuki Yone (Hakuoki, Hiiro no Kakera, Kamigami no Asobi).

The soundtrack is composed and performed by ZIZZ Studio (Mary Skelter series, Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, The Song of Saya) with Itou Kanako, Watanabe Kazuhiro and Stella Lee Jones performing the vocals for the game’s main themes. The English translation is handled by Molly Lee, who previously worked on Taisho x Alice, You and Me and Her: A Love Story, Sweet Pool and other titles.

We’ll be sure to keep you informed as developer Medium and publisher YOX-Project share information on the upcoming episodes of the Chronicles of Refugia visual novel.
