Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights Shutting Down February 2023; Will Have Lasted 13 Months

Square Enix has announced that their mobile free-to-play gacha title, Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights, will cease service on February 28, 2023. This Japan-only game began its service on January 27, 2022, so it will have lasted just over a year.

Shortly after launch, the mobile title achieved two million downloads and emphasized its half-year anniversary with some gorgeous illustrations.

Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights features an original story from Keiichi Ajiro, scenario writer of the previous entries in the series. This includes overseeing the world and the cross-over events that occur.

Many fans hoped this entry would see a supported Western launch, but that reality’s no longer feasible. Admittedly, even as someone who absolutely detests gacha experiences with every fiber of his being, seeing these shutdowns always makes me kind of sad.

While it’s in this genre’s nature to profit off of its player base and then become inaccessible after an unknown period of time, it almost feels worse when that time is as brief as this. Regardless, it’s ultimately dependent on one’s perspective.
