So PAX West 2022 happened, and we couldn’t have been more excited to head out to Seattle, Washington, and check out what the show had to offer. This year featured plenty of indie developers showing off their games for the first time. With that said, we’d like to highlight a few titles that we think you should keep your eye on.
Steam 2022 release
Re:Call is a unique adventure game where memories can be twisted and manipulated. Players will mostly play through flashbacks where their actions have direct consequences in the present timeline. This could lead to bad ends, but you’ll piece together the best way to progress through trial and error. The game features a speedier option across multiple playthroughs to keep the narrative moving. However, we could only play with one character, but other characters feature unique quirks to approach situations.
Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly
PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Steam 2023 release
Let’s pour another cup for fans of narrative adventure games. Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly continues the story of the late-night coffee shop with new drinks, characters, and lo-fi beats. The narrative will continue to develop the world as you craft drinks to perfection for your customers. If you haven’t already, but sure to give the original Coffee Talk a playthrough.
Mina The Hollower
Mina the Hollower takes Castlevania and Bloodborne, mixes them together, and delivers an old-school adventure that we need in our lives. Every encounter in the game will test your skills as Mina utilizes various weapons to take down powerful enemies. Technically, she’s robbing graves, so can you really blame them? The 8-bit visuals don’t hold it back from being a must-play title for modern gamers looking for a challenge across every screen.
Steam 2023 release
One look at Arcadian Atlas will remind you of the countless hours you invested in games such as Final Fantasy Tactics. This adventure is full of character-building and a rich narrative, making it tough to step away from. Our experience with the game introduced us to a world divided by war. The game features grid-based combat, unit customization, and some beautiful sprite work. If you haven’t heard about this game, we’re glad we could change that for you.
Tails: The Backbone Preludes
Steam 2023 Release
Tails: The Backbone Preludes will turn us all into furries. This noir adventure features a narrative built around four characters and fueled by the choices made by players. In dialogue, players will make a selection that branches the narrative across various outcomes. The game is meant to be shorter than the original release, so the developers could focus on making the story beats more impactful. Further, choices matter this time and will alter the conclusion based on your actions.
PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X, Switch, Steam release
Inspired by the film Blade Runner and games such as Persona, Mato Anomalies bleeds style. Players will take on missions that lead them across Mato as dual protagonists Doe and Gram. The two must work together to fight off demonic abominations and investigate the cause of strange anomalies around the city. The battle system is turn-based as players will fight against creatures and utilize Gram’s abilities. We’re excited to see how this game evolves throughout its development, but it already has our attention.
Cricket: Jae’s Really Peculiar Game
Cricket: Jae’s Really Peculiar Game is a game that we’ve had our eye on for a while. This animated adventure is inspired by EarthBound but definitely stands out in the crowd of other RPGs. The characters set off on an adventure to the moon, which is rumored to contain a means that’ll grant any wish. Given that these characters are so young, we can expect some rather charming encounters full of imagination. Exploration is also of note as players navigate various environments and interact with others.
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, Steam, Humble Games Store October 27, 2022 release
Signalis easily made this list. Everything about this grim and mysterious adventure has us wanting more. The survival horror elements lead players through enemy-filled rooms after the main protagonist, Elster, wakes up after a long slumber, looking for answers. Gameplay is full of tension as players must manage scarce resources and complete puzzles to progress. If that’s not enough, one look at the design of the characters and world will slingshot this game as a must-play this Halloween.
Switch, Steam 2022
Melatonin is a dreamy rhythm game that aims to tell an engrossing narrative as you tap your way through each of the stages. Your performance is graded, which unlocks later levels, but I was nodding my head to the beat no matter how many times I had to retry. Aside from the tunes, the game features a gorgeous color pallet of soft colors and whimsical situations. Still, there’s something to be said about the main protagonist that we’re curious to know more about in the later levels. Melatonin has an added layer of challenge as well, but a little practice will get you on the right beat in no time.
