Larian Studios announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 will have its Early Access delayed by a week to release on October 6.
However, the studio supplemented this delay by giving us an update about the game’s romance and companionship options. During gameplay, each companion has their own personality, goals, and motivations. Bound by the Illithid tadpole buried in their head, they join the party and put aside their differences to survive. The difference will be what makes the adventure so unique as characters will react to the player’s choices and actions. The entire adventure is shaped by who the player is and what they do.
As the narrative progresses, players can unlock a potential romance with the companions, which comes with hundreds of permutations that define where the relationship heads, if anywhere. The systems in place make this a true Larian RPG like no other as these relationships are designed to create the most intimate, authentic, and reactive experiences for the player.
“At the end of the day, this remains a D&D game, and the most important character in a game of D&D is you,” said Sarah Baylus, lead writer at Larian Studios.
Baylus explained, “It really comes down to each individual character. There is no overarching design about how a character should react. It’s really organic and about what makes sense for them.
“We are trying to make these relationships feel real and feel like the relationships you have in the real world. You will meet some people who you have nothing in common with, some will be useful to work together, but that is going to be the extent of it. But there could be situations where you get on really well, you share similar goals and you love travelling together.
“We want these relationships to feel like they would in the real world, like you are falling in love with someone, or you are falling in like with someone, or you just feel attracted to someone. That should all feel real and authentic.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 was announced during E3 2019 and is a sequel to Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II. The game is meant to bring a AAA budget to the RPG to get the most out of the cinematic dialogue, cooperative multiplayer features, and the complete ruleset based on 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons.
The company plans to release more information about the game during D&D Live 2020, taking place on June 18 digitally at the Dungeons & Dragons website. The team will play the game live and allow the community to choose what happens at the end of the demo, which revolves around killing a demon or going down a darker path.
