Ever dreamed of being an astronaut? I know I have. If you’re one of the two million or so players that explored System Era Softworks’ Astroneer while it was in Early Access, you got a pretty solid idea of what’s it like to be space explorer. Soon, however, you’ll be able to enjoy a complete space exploration voyage as Astroneer, the interplanetary survival sandbox game, is officially launching on Xbox One and PC on February 6, 2019.
Astroneer is set during the 25th century gold rush where players take control of an Astroneer (space explorer) and explore outer space, risking their lives in harsh environments to unearth rare discoveries and of course, get rich. In this vast adventure — which can be enjoyed solo or with fellow astroneers online — a player’s most useful tool is their ability to shape their world, and obtain galactic resources. With resources, players can trade or craft new tools, vehicles, and modules to create everything from massive industrial bases to mobile rover bases.
The launch version of Astroneer is going to be one giant leap for playerkind as it’ll have a galaxy’s worth of new narrative elements, along with unique content to explore, like a new exploration-focused adventure that will take you to seven brand new planets. Prepare to face tremendous challenges like dangerous flora, treacherous terrain and immense, mysterious structures along the way.
While exploring the outer reaches of space in a traditional all-white astronaut suit is fine and dandy, you’ll have the option to look as fly and as far out as you want thanks to various character customization options. For me, I’ll be rocking a blue astronaut suit.
Another choice players will have is the way they’d like to build in Astroneer. With the addition of dedicated servers, you can choose to build your bases asynchronously through Xbox One and PC cross-play. The developer had originally planned for this to be included, so I’m glad to know that they’re making their vision a reality in the full release of Astroneer.
Speaking of the developer, System Era Softworks is composed of senior AAA veterans from companies that every gamer on planet Earth knows about like Bungie, Ubisoft, Disney, Valve and many more — so, I’m sure they know at least a thing or two about how to make an epic game. Through their collective vision of interplanetary exploration, the mighty team decided to develop Astroneer — an experience where creativity is the only limit. In a press release, Joe Tirado, communications director at System Era Softworks, shared what Astroneer means to the team:
Astroneer reflects on the legacy of human space exploration and imagines the future. We want to inspire a sense of wonder and reverence for the beautiful universe we live in, while promoting ideals such as creativity, tackling adversity and outside-the-box thinking.
Astroneer is currently available on Steam Early Access and Xbox One Game Preview for $19.99, but will rise to its final launch price of $29.99 on November 16 and include a brand new “Retro” suit exclusively for Early Access supporters. So if you want to save some cash, skyrocket on over to Steam and the Xbox Store before it’s too late.
