Braid Artist’s Newest Game ‘Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure’ Revealed in Trailer

Developer Furniture & Mattress revealed their first game is Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure, coming to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in Summer 2024.

“We started talking about this project on March 10th, 2020, so obviously a lot has changed in the world since then,” reflects co-founder Nick Suttner. “But we’ve done the best we can to stay positive in a challenging environment in which to make games, and to create something beautiful, breezy, and memorable that stays true to each of our sensibilities. While we’ve all been in games for a while, this was a milestone project for all of us – my first time working on a game from start to finish, Nico’s first time shipping a full-scope game across multiple platforms, and David’s first full game project since Braid. Thanks to anyone who gives it a shot, it means a lot to us!”

Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure marries the artistic prowess of David Hellman of “Braid” fame, the engaging storytelling of Nick Suttner known for “Carto,” and the inventive puzzle design of Nicolás Recabarren from “Ethereal.” This collaborative effort is underscored by the distinctive sounds of Tomás Batista, who brings an additional layer of immersion through his compositions on the charango, a South American stringed instrument. The project stands out as the inaugural recipient of support from the philanthropic Astra Fund, which highlights its unique position in the indie game landscape. With self-publishing by F&M, “Arranger” represents a significant milestone for the co-founders and their assembled team of skilled contributors.

The game itself centers on Jemma, a character who embarks on a profound journey of self-discovery from her small-town origins to confront a world paralyzed by fear and an omnipresent “static” force. Through an innovative gameplay “grid” that seamlessly integrates movement, exploration, and combat across the game world, players experience a fluid and interconnected adventure. “Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure promises an engaging 8-10 hour campaign devoid of traditional RPG mechanics like XP or inventory management, focusing instead on in-world interactions and puzzles. This setup, combined with various assist options, ensures a gameplay experience that challenges without frustrating, encapsulating the team’s vision for a fresh, narrative-driven adventure.
